A windy NSW State Champs 19, 20 Nov 22

NSW/ACT State Open, Youth & Masters – 19 & 20 November

Commodore Graham reports:

MHASC was well represented with 14 of the 101 sailors on the water at Wangi Wangi.

Saturday wind was NE over 15 knots gusting to 20 knots.  The 3 x 40mins races format provided a solid challenge, and in the end, fortunately a result for the event.

Upwind the waves required respect, and downwind provided some great rides, and potential for ‘nose dives’ for some. No gate at the bottom mark made for gybe capsizes. Action packed racing!

The breeze went westerly on Sunday with 30+ knot winds strong winds. The organisers made the right call abandoning Day 2 and it highlighted that you needed to hit the ground running strong on day 1 as all races now counted – no drops!

A regatta highlight was seeing the enthusiastic young 4.7 fleet in action – a fleet of 24 from across the East Coast.

Standards

Campbell Paton (Open, DBSC) won overall by just 1 point from MHASC member Will Sargent – well done Will in the 3 race lottery!
Julian Taylor who is in the process of joining MHASC was 3rd in the U21.
Nick Alexander (who is still getting back on his feet post Covid) managed 4th in the Masters fleet.
Phil Bookallil rounded out the MHASC contingent with an 8th in the Masters.

Well done to the MHASC team who also seemed to excel in the evening ‘social recreation’ department!
